FRIESS FMF 420/6 Grinding-Coolant Filtration Case Study

Reduce Particle-Induced Scratches,
Improve Ground Surface Quality

An automotive steering-component manufacturer installed FMF 420/6 magnetic filtration in its grinding coolant system. Subsequent sample analysis found no detectable particles. Component surface quality improved substantially, and no further grinding-quality complaints were recorded. The customer then fitted a second system with the same filter.

Case Background

A steering-component manufacturer grinds individual automotive parts to extremely tight tolerances. The demanding quality standard requires scratch-free surfaces and a uniform grinding pattern.

Grinding-Quality Problems

To achieve the required surface quality, the grinding coolant must be exceptionally clean. Particles entering the contact zone between the grinding wheel and the workpiece can create deep scratches or grooves and cause rejects.

Cartridge filters with different ratings were already in use. Although coolant cleanliness was relatively good, complaints about the grinding pattern continued.

The company sought to remove as many fine particles as possible, including particles below 1 µm, without high consumable-filter costs.

Solution: FMF 420/6 Magnetic Filtration

Installing a FRIESS FMF 420/6 magnetic filter significantly improved coolant purity.

Particle analysis after installation showed that the coolant delivered through the nozzles to the grinding wheel and workpiece was free of detectable particles.

The cleaner coolant produced a marked improvement in the surface quality of the machined parts. No further complaints have been recorded since the magnetic filter was installed.

Following the successful result, a second system was also equipped with an FMF 420/6.
