Which contaminants are commonly found in coolant?
Metalworking processes introduce metal fines and small particles. Machine-way oil and hydraulic oil create tramp-oil contamination, while mineral, chemical or microbial contamination may also occur depending on the production environment.

Where are coolants used?
Coolants are used primarily in cutting, grinding and drilling operations for cooling, lubrication, chip removal and corrosion protection. Without effective cooling and lubrication, heat and friction accelerate tool and equipment wear and reduce surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

Which condition parameters should be monitored?

Section 08 | Which Equipment Is Needed for Coolant Maintenance?

There is no single coolant-maintenance machine suitable for every production site. First identify the contaminants, contamination load and target cleanliness, then select the appropriate treatment method.

Magnetic filtration
High-intensity magnetic filters capture iron, steel and other magnetizable fines without the pore-size limitations of conventional filter cloth and without filter-media consumption. Units can be mobile or stationary and used in bypass or full-flow filtration.

Oil skimmers
When tramp oil is less dense than the coolant and floats on the surface, an oil skimmer can remove it continuously. Tube-type skimmers accommodate a range of fluid-level fluctuations and suit both individual machine sumps and larger central systems.

Oil-water separators
When oil droplets do not rise reliably in the sump, or when free oil, settled sludge and other contaminants occur together, bypass treatment can combine flow stabilization, settling and coalescence.

Filter cloth or mechanical prefiltration
Filter cloth captures larger solid particles by pore size. It does not effectively remove floating oil or separate contaminants selectively, and the used cloth must be replaced and disposed of. It is therefore generally best used as prefiltration.
