A steel mill replaced its unreliable mop-rope skimmer with an S100 after a three-month trial. The conversion took one working day. The complete investment, including the S100 and installation, cost less than the former skimmer’s annual repair expenses. Existing floating-hose guides could be reused.
Case background
A mop-rope skimmer was used in a steel mill’s longitudinal clarifier. Frequent repairs and high maintenance and repair costs led the operator to seek a more economical alternative. After a three-month trial with the S100, the operator decided to purchase it.
Removing the old skimmer and installing the S100
After the existing unit was removed, the S100 oil skimmer was mounted on the existing separation tank using an additional support frame. In the control system, the existing motor-protection switch was replaced with two motor-protection switches suitable for the S100’s two drives. The complete conversion was finished within one working day.
Because the existing oil-retaining baffle had slots in its lower section, the German case describes a planned retrofit of a floating oil barrier between the oil-attracting hose and the baffle. This would reliably retain the floating oil phase in the basin so the oil-attracting hose could collect it before it reached the downstream gravel filter.
Cost savings with the S100 oil skimmer
Result: The complete conversion, including the purchase of the S100, cost less than the annual repair expenses for the previous mop skimmer. The original case reports fault-free S100 operation since its commissioning in 2011. The conversion was relatively simple because the existing floating-hose guide could continue to be used.
