An automotive component manufacturer uses several grinding machines to finish steering-system parts. The demanding quality specification requires completely scratch-free surfaces and a uniform grinding finish.

The Problem

To achieve the required quality, the coolant in the grinding machines must be kept as clean as possible. Particles carried between the grinding wheel and the workpiece can create scratches or grooves.

The company used various filter elements with different pore sizes to maintain coolant cleanliness. Although the coolant appeared relatively clean, customers still complained about component surface quality. The manufacturer needed a cost-effective technology capable of removing particles down to 1 µm. The maintenance team was particularly interested in a system with low consumable costs and minimal waste generation.

The Solution

The production and maintenance managers decided to install a FRIESS FMF 420/6 magnetic filter. After installation, the coolant was analysed for particle contamination. The analysis showed that the coolant delivered through the nozzles to the grinding wheel and workpiece contained no particles larger than 1 µm. The FMF 420/6 was instrumental in increasing coolant cleanliness, and the exceptionally clean coolant significantly improved component surface quality.

Since the magnetic filter was commissioned, no components have been rejected because of scratches or grooves on the surface.

Following the successful result, a second system was equipped with an FMF 420/6 magnetic filter to reproduce the same performance.
