A steering-component manufacturer grinds individual automotive parts to extremely tight tolerances. The demanding quality standard requires scratch-free surfaces and a uniform grinding pattern.

The Problem

To achieve the required surface quality, the grinding coolant must be exceptionally clean. Particles entering the contact zone between the grinding wheel and the workpiece can create deep scratches or grooves and cause rejects.

Cartridge filters with different ratings were already in use. Although the coolant appeared relatively clean, microscopic inspections still revealed defects.

The company needed to remove as many particles below 1 µm as possible without increasing consumable-filter costs.

Installing a FRIESS FMF 420/6 magnetic filter significantly improved coolant purity.

Particle analysis after installation showed that the coolant delivered through the nozzles to the grinding wheel and workpiece was free of detectable particles.

The cleaner coolant produced a marked improvement in the surface quality of the machined parts. No further complaints have been recorded since the magnetic filter was installed.

Following the successful result, a second system was also equipped with an FMF 420/6.
