Hoerbiger Synchron Technik GmbH manufactures engine components and other metal parts in large volumes for the automotive and energy industries, along with numerous components for other industrial sectors.
During machining, coolant is delivered to the cutting zone through fine nozzles. These nozzles were repeatedly blocked by metal chips generated during production.
Blocked nozzles interrupted internal machine cooling and could cause indexable inserts to break. Cleaning and repairing the blocked nozzles was both time-consuming and expensive.
As a trial, the customer installed an FMF 310/1 magnetic filter in the pump circulation loop of one machine to remove metal chips and other ferrous contaminants generated during machining.
After the magnetic filter was installed, the nozzles stopped becoming blocked.
The FMF magnetic filter is made from robust stainless steel. High-performance permanent magnets remove all steel particles from the coolant before the filtered fluid is returned through the nozzles to the workpiece.
Since installation, the nozzles have operated reliably without blockages or particle-related damage. The coolant also lasts longer, further reducing operating costs.
Following the excellent results on the first machine, the customer equipped another 19 machines with magnetic filters to solve the same problem.
After the magnetic filter proved successful in machining, the customer turned to contamination problems in the component-cleaning process.
After machining, the engine components are first shot-blasted and then cleaned.
Metal dust from the shot-blasting system heavily contaminated the cleaning medium in the MTM high-pressure cleaning system. This shortened the life of the cleaning medium and required frequent replacement or maintenance of the existing filters.
Because the cleaning system uses a higher-capacity pump, it required a larger magnetic filter than the machining application.
To handle the higher flow rate, the customer selected an FMF 420/6 magnetic filter and installed it directly downstream of the pump.
Shortly after commissioning, it was already clear that the magnetic filter was removing large quantities of contamination from the cleaning medium.
The magnetic filter improved the cleanliness of the cleaning medium and therefore the cleaning result. It also extended the service life of the existing filter by a factor of four.
Based on these results, the customer installed the same magnetic filter on two additional cleaning systems.
