FRIESS S100 Oil Skimmer for Edible-Oil Production

An edible-oil producer faced oil contamination in the process water used throughout several stages of production.

The Problem

The existing wastewater-treatment system did not separate oil and water sufficiently, leaving the wastewater inadequately cleaned. At the same time, the recovered oil had the potential to be reused in a variety of industrial applications.

Because the previous separation system was inefficient, the collected oil contained too much water. Evaporating that water required excessive energy, while the high temperatures needed also degraded the quality of the vegetable oil. The plant therefore needed an efficient and sustainable mechanical solution for separating oil from wastewater.

The Solution: FRIESS S100 Oil Skimmer

S100 After Installation

FRIESS S100 oil skimmer installed at an edible-oil plant to recover floating oil from process wastewater

The plant selected a FRIESS S100 oil skimmer. Once the oil–water mixture in the collection tank became calm, a substantial portion of the oil separated and rose to the surface. Neutralisation in the tank strengthened this effect: sulfuric acid was used to neutralise the alkaline mixture, causing even very fine oil droplets dissolved in the water to separate and rise. The resulting surface oil film could then be continuously removed by the S100.

Results

Current calculations show that the S100 discharges approximately 30 litres of oil per hour into the collection tank. The customer is highly satisfied with the result.

The S100 provides a simple and sustainable way to keep the wastewater free of oil. The separated vegetable oil contains very little water and can be reused in various industrial applications.

With its flexible collection-tube length, the powerful S100 is particularly well suited to large settling tanks. Durable stainless-steel and ceramic components make the unit easy to maintain and suitable even for chemically aggressive process baths.
