FRIESS S100 Oil Skimmer Replaces Mop Skimmer in a Steel Mill
The complete conversion, including the S100 oil skimmer, cost less than one year of maintenance for the former mop skimmer.
A mop-rope skimmer was used on a steel mill’s longitudinal clarifier. Frequent repairs and high maintenance costs led the operator to look for a more economical alternative. After a three-month trial of the S100 oil skimmer, the plant selected it for permanent operation.
Removing the Old Skimmer and Installing the S100
After the existing unit was removed, the S100 oil skimmer was mounted on the existing separation tank using an additional support frame. In the control system, the existing motor-protection switch was replaced with two motor-protection switches suitable for the S100’s two drives. The complete conversion was finished within one working day.
Because the existing oil-retaining baffle had slots in its lower section, a floating oil barrier was installed between the oil-attracting hose and the baffle. This reliably retained the floating oil phase in the basin. The oil collecting at the barrier was then picked up by the oil-attracting hose and could no longer reach the downstream gravel filter.
Cost Savings with the S100 Oil Skimmer
Result: The complete conversion, including the purchase of the S100, cost less than the annual repair expenses for the previous mop skimmer. The S100 has operated without failure since 2011. The conversion was relatively simple because the existing floating-hose guide could continue to be used.
