A metalworking company needed wash fluid magnetic filtration for a washing machine used to clean cast-iron hydraulic components after hot grinding. The process removes oil and grease as well as particulate contamination consisting of iron and carbon.
Despite the existing filtration system, large quantities of particles accumulated in the washing tank. Sludge formed at the bottom of the tank and reduced the effectiveness of particle removal during the washing process.
Because most of the particles were cast iron, the company was advised that a magnetic filtration system could solve the problem. Cast iron is strongly magnetic and can be removed efficiently without consumable filter media. An ASMF 3 loan unit was installed for several months so the customer could assess the results under real operating conditions. This model was selected because the customer wanted an automated system that could operate independently with minimal inspection.
To support largely autonomous operation, the system control cabinet was connected to the plant control system, enabling remote monitoring of the magnetic filtration system and fault detection. The customer selected an ASMF 5 automatic magnetic filtration system.
After reviewing the results from the test unit, the customer ordered an ASMF 5 automatic magnetic filtration system with a backwash-fluid cleaning system.
The wash fluid was relatively expensive, so the customer wanted to minimize losses during the ASMF flushing cycle. A recovery unit was therefore connected to the ASMF system to separate magnetic particles from the discharged liquid used to flush the magnetic filter.
Because the wash fluid was aggressive, every component in contact with it had to be made of stainless steel. Most ASMF components are stainless steel as standard, but the piping and valves were upgraded to higher-grade materials.
After installation and several months of operation, the customer analyzed the system and recorded the following results:
